The progression system follows the two styles, Shotokan and Fudokan. The ranks range from 9th kyu (white belt) to 1st kyu (brown belt) and from 1st to 10th dan (black belt).
A practitioner starts at the rank of 9th kyu – white belt, and then progresses through three red stripes on the white belt (8th-6th kyu). According to WFF periodization, examinations are conducted based on well-defined criteria after a period of preparation. These examinations evaluate aspects such as technique, self-control, emotional balance, physical readiness, and other factors depending on the rank for which the examination is being held.

According to the WFF periodization the examination is done according to well defined criteria following a period of training. During this examination, aspects related to technique, self-control, emotional balance, physical preparation plus other aspects are followed depending on the degree for which the examination is taken.
